What is organic cotton wool?
Organic refers to cotton wool from organic farming and subsequently processed and packaged according to specific international standards. This means that the whole process of growing, harvesting and processing overcomes regular controls which guarantee quality and traceability and compliance with ethical and environmental standard.
This process is internationally certified by recognized accreditation bodies. Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment.
For example, an essential element of organic production is the careful selection of varieties adapted to local conditions in terms of climate and soil.
When the soil needs it is provided the use of fertilizers and pesticides, strictly organic. Soil fertility management and crop nutrition are based on crop diversification and organic inputs such as compost, mulch and manures. Pest management measures focus essentially on pest prevention and the stimulation of a balanced agroecosystem through crop rotation, mixed cultivation, trap crops, and the use of natural pesticides when pest infestation rises above the economic threshold. Methods and substances totally natural are also required during the spinning process of organic cotton (where cotton fibers are spun into yarn). The bleaching stage is carried out also with the exclusive use of hydrogen peroxide (commonly known as oxygenated water), thus avoiding harmful brighteners and bleachers such as chlorine.
Attention: Turati Idrofilo S.p.A. guarantees this kind of bleaching process also for the non – organic cotton wool, because Turati Idrofilo manufactures only high quality cotton wool according to European Pharmacopoeia in force.
Farmers, consumers and environment, all benefit from the economic, social and ecological advantages of organic cotton production.
It benefits cotton producers and the environment in developing countries by avoiding the harmful effects of toxic pesticides, and the reduced cost of production improves social conditions.
Organic agriculture systems replenish and maintain soil fertility and build biologically diverse agriculture.
